Anomaly Scan

Anomaly scan is a detailed method of examining fetal development in the second trimester of pregnancy and evaluating the structures of the fetus in depth. During the scan, heart, brain, spinal cord, kidney, and abdomen anomalies in the fetus are examined. The method allows for 11 rare disorders to be identified.

In these circumstances, the mother is unable to change the conditions of her pregnancy but treatment measures are taken if required. The ultrasound scan is usually carried out in a dark room so that the quality of the black-and-white image can be clear. This is a safe method that does not threaten the mother and fetus. Some pressure may simply be applied to the mother’s abdomen.

Doppler Sonography

Examination with the color Doppler imaging (CDI) can be carried out more accurately. It is a noninvasive test with no radiation or injection of any substance to the mother. High-frequency sound waves are bounced off body tissues and their echoes produce color images. These types of images are widely used to examine fetal blood vessels.

This ultrasound is the main method for diagnosing deep vein thrombosis and measures blood flow velocity throughout the body. If blood flow is stopped or decreased in some parts, it can be easily detected. Bulging arteries (aneurysms) can also be diagnosed.

CDI is prescribed by the doctor if the mother feels tired or has recently undergone cardiovascular treatment.

Doppler Sonography ​
General Sonography

High-frequency sound waves are used in general ultrasound. It diagnoses probable diseases with no pain or risk. A small probe, or transducer, is used in this method that sends and receives sound waves. Differences in body tissues create an image in a computer with the echoes of the sound waves.

High-energy waves such as X-rays are not used in this type of imaging. This is a noninvasive medical procedure for diagnosing and treating diseases. In a general ultrasound, images are formed instantly with the echoes of the sound waves. The mechanism allows for the examination of structures and movement of internal organs.

Multiple Pregnancy Sonography

The usual ultrasound methods can also detect multiple pregnancies. The best time to diagnose multiple fetuses is in the 10th week of pregnancy.

If multiple pregnancies involve several fetuses, an accurate diagnosis of their number may still be associated with errors in the third trimester of pregnancy. Pelvic and abdominal ultrasounds may be used in multiple pregnancies for a more accurate diagnosis.

Clinical symptoms that help diagnose multiple pregnancies alongside this ultrasound method are:

  • Excessive weight gain by the mother during the pregnancy
  • Hearing the heartbeat of more than one heart
  • Larger uterus than expected for gestational age
  • Information from previous scans
  • Observing the simultaneous movement of fetuses in different parts of the abdomen
DV-TR-NB-NT Sonography

This ultrasound is used to examine for genetic or chromosomal abnormalities. This is vital screening for abnormalities in the fetus and is carried out in the first trimester of pregnancy. The NT scan is performed transabdominally or transvaginally with similar results obtained in both methods.

The NT scan is performed transabdominally in 95% of cases. It is rarely performed transvaginally. The mechanism is based on measuring the amount of fluid behind the baby’s neck. If an anomaly is detected in the fetus in this method, the pregnancy can be terminated with fewer complications.

DV-TR-NB-NT Sonography ​
3D and 4D Sonography

There is a range of ultrasounds available, one of which is the 3D ultrasound method. This is not very different from the general ultrasound method except that the images are in 3D and can be used for a clearer image of the baby.

The best time to perform the 3D and 4D ultrasounds is from the 26 to 30 weeks of pregnancy.  The baby’s face has less fat before the 26th week and the facial features are not very clear. In a 4D scan, smaller details such as opening and closing the eyes and mouth can be examined. Anatomical disorders in the fetus can also be diagnosed using this method.
